Our Mandate
Our Association gives representation for the individual Simmental breeders in our province and promotes the Simmental breed to potential markets within our province as well as abroad.
We manage local issues and carry forward ideas and recommendations to the Canadian Simmental Association for their consideration.
The Canadian Simmental Association regulates animal registrations for Canadian Simmental breeders and all primary issue concerning the Simmental breed in Canada.
The Quebec Simmental Association acts as liaison between the local breeders and the C.S.A. offices, while helping to promote Simmental on a provincial basis through various initiatives and activities.
Our History to date
1978:
A group of Quebec breeders decide to form a group to help promote the Simmental breed in the province of Quebec. The operating budget was then $ 3,000.
1980:
Mr. Armand Pellerin is hired as the field person/secretary for our Simmental breeders. A trip to France is organized during which 19 members make the acquisition of a number of Simmental animals, in view of improving the breed back home. The organisation's motto was then: " Simmental, the breed for the future".
1981:
- On June 11th, 1981, the following 9 members file a request for the incorporation of the "Association Simmental du Québec" with the ministry of corporate affairs: Marcellin Lavoie *, Henri Couture, Laurier Fluet, Jocelyn Autotte *, Claude Carrière, Armand Pellerin *, Charles-Henri St-Pierre, Renaud Fortier, Camille Dubois.
- The corporation is registered on August 18th, 1981. The provisional officers are then: M. Marcellin Lavoie, M. Jocelyn Autotte, M. Armand Perreault. The head office is located at 438 Route Nationale 138, St-Augustin (Cte Portneuf), Qué.
- A subsidy of $ 10,000 from the Québec Ministry of Agriculture is granted to the A.S.Q..
- The A.S.Q. takes part in a program involving young test station bulls, promoted by the Québec Ministry of Agriculture. The sale is conducted in collaboration with the "Association des Éleveurs de Bovins de Boucherie Pur-sang du Québec". Result: the Simmental cattle are sold at a higher price to the other breed, with an average of $ 1,652.00.
- The A.S.Q. has then 275 members.
- The A.S.Q. adopts a charter and membership by-laws.
1984:
A woman is president of the A.S.Q.: Mrs. Sylvie Gouin.
1985:
- Road Map project involving the Québec Simmental breeders, with a production date set for April 1986, with a sponsorship from the Québec Ministry of Agriculture.
1986:
- Publishing and distribution of the Québec Simmental road-map. Of all the purebred cattle breeds association in Québec, the A.S.Q. is the first to achieve such a project.
- The first purebred female provincial sale, sponsored by the A.S.Q., is organized. 59 heads are sold with an average of $ 1,244 per animal.
- Mr. Dick Stoddard from Waterloo is elected President of the Canadian Simmental Association in Calgary. He is the first Québec member to accede to this position.
1988:
In the month of May, the first issue of the "Revue Simmental Québec" is published.
1993:
- The A.S.Q. helps to organize the Annual Canadian Simmental Meeting during the Expo-Québec event in Québec City in August 1993, with the support of Mr. Yves Gagnon, our national director.
- A breeders' directory for Québec is published in time for the National Meeting, together with an insert in the Simmental Country magazine.
1994:
- Review and modification of the membership by-laws of the A.S.Q.. The number of directors goes from 9 to 6. Out of province memberships and corporate memberships are added to the membership groups of the A.S.Q..
